John’s Pond
In this painting, my children and our neighbors swim in a pond near our house - John’s pond.
While working on it, I looked at historical paintings of soap bubbles, particularly Chardin. Historically, soap bubbles stood for trickery and impermanence.
I like that a bubble needs breath inside it to exist. It stretches and reflects the world, and then pops. In this painting, it’s threatening to pop right in the face of old age.
